These earrings are called ‘Aniskotamowin’. It means traditions; knowledge that comes from the land, our Mother Earth.
They are made of moose hide, 24k gold round centers, and ethically sourced buffalo bone, carved into elk tooth.
To me, these symbolize reclaiming and strengthening our traditions in a good way. My understanding of Nehiyaw teachings is to recognize our responsibility and relationship to the land, to each other, to the Creator, and have all of those things live in harmony. Some of us have added new traditions to our lives, and that’s ok! It is ok to add to ourselves things that increase happiness to our lives. We are each reclaiming and continuing our journeys in a good way, hopefully. But we all come from somewhere, and these carry the hope of retaining what we already know - Aniskotamowin.
