Kwêkwêkocîs - firefly.
As a kid, sometimes my mum would let us play outside late at night - we would play Kick the Can with our cousins, or maybe we would lie on blankets and watch the northern lights. And sometimes, she would let us go outside to catch fireflies.
It was so fun to run around in the dark. There are really, really sweet memories from growing up on the Rez that always puts a lump in my throat. Trying to catch fireflies with my brothers and sister is one of them. I never caught a single one.
I don’t know what a firefly actually looks like, to be honest. I beaded this using my best guess while also choosing colours I love. Because even though I don’t know what they actually looked like, I know what trying to catch them felt like.
And it was magical.
