This piece is called Mwestas - it means “another time” or “see you later”.
I’ve been thinking about the idea behind this piece for a while. My parents taught us the concept that eternity is a circle (without beginning or end), and that the circle is the strongest shape. So when I wanted to make a piece about my feelings for ancestral connection, I wanted to make sure that it was circular and surrounded by purple (Kokum colours).
We are not connected to our ancestors in some abstract way; our spirits often feel and know how close their experiences are. That’s why the joy we experience can be so pronounced and pain can also be so acute. It’s a connection of everything our ancestors have felt over generations of time.
That’s why I named this Mwestas. I had been mulling over a lot of possible names but the concept of “another time” and “see you later” felt like all of these ideas connecting.
This quote my Neal A. Maxwell sums up a lot of my feelings:
“Time is clearly not our natural dimension. Thus it is that we are never really at home in time. Alternately, we find ourselves wishing to hasten the passage of time or to hold back the dawn. We can do neither, of course... we belong to eternity.”
